As the name suggests, a “green wall” is simply a building wall that is partially or entirely covered with vegetation that is either growing from the ground, in soil that is supported vertically, or in an inorganic growing medium. At least as early as the 1930s, an American professor of landscape architecture by the name of Stanley Hart White created what he called “botanical bricks,” which he later developed into a patented “vegetation-bearing architectonic structure.” This is when the idea of an architectural green wall first emerged. White’s invention, however, wasn’t widely used because it was a little too impractical.
The presence of Green wall plants in a home significantly improves the air quality. By removing airborne particles, the wall transforms CO2 into oxygen. Only one square metre of living wall removes 2.3 kg of CO2 from the air each year and generates 1.7 kg of oxygen. Numerous studies have demonstrated how harmful VOCs are absorbed by plants and the microbes present in soil media and transformed into a substance that plants can use as food.
